Hinkelhatz
C. Annuum
20,000 – 30,000 SHUHinkelhatz is a great little chilli. Its been around, thanks to the Dutch, since about 1880. ‘Hinkelhatz’ literally means ‘Chicken heart’, which describes the shape. They are hot and tasty. Very good to slice up on a salad for a bit of a kick! They are traditionally used for Chilli vinegar, pickling and oil where they really shine through. This Chilli is also in the ‘Slow Food Arc of Taste’, So you know it has to be good right?

Honeypeno
C. Annuum
3,000 – 5,000 SHUWell this is interesting – A Jalapeno type chilli pepper that has an apple/honey flavour. Mmmm Mmmm… Honeypeno what a great name too. This one was created by Pepperlover for extra sweetness. It is very mild in heat and can be used like all Jalapeno’s – poppers or pickled would be a good choice. Around the same size as a regular Jalapeno the Honeypeno is slightly more tapered at the bottom. We love it and we know you will too.

Jamaican Scotch Bonnet
C. Chinense
250,000 – 300,000 SHUBIG UP to this chilli pepper – as the Jamaicans would say – meaning RESPECT…
This is a very popular chilli in the Caribbean and is used for making Jerk sauce, hot sauce and many other traditional Jamaican dishes. Not only does the Jamaican Scotch Bonnet chilli taste amazing with its sweet fruity zing, it is super easy to grow. Its close to say an orange habanero in heat but is sweeter with flavour undertones of apple/orange. Of course its called a Scotch Bonnet because it has the classic bonnet hat shape. Fruit ripen to a glossy yellow/orange colour and get up to 5cms long and 6cms wide. A must have if you’re into making hot sauce we’d say.10+ Seeds

Jay’s Choc Ghost Scorpion
C. Chinense
900,000 SHUJays Chocolate Ghost Scorpion was discovered by a guy called (strangely enough) Jay in Pennsylvania and remains fairly unstable. The good thing is it tastes like the Jays Red but is a lot hotter! It has a hint of floral flavour which a lot of chilliheads love. We liked growing it and it produced quite well! Give it a shot if you would like to see what cool shapes you may get!

Jumbo Jalapeno
C. Annuum
8,000 – 12,000 SHUIt’s a giant jalapeño! This one would certainly make whopper poppers. Also referred to as the ‘Numex Jalmundo’ this variety was developed at the New Mexico State University, (which creates all “NuMex” varieties of plants). The fruit have a smooth skin and very thick flesh, which makes them easier to stuff. They grow to around 6-7cm long and are hotter and sweeter than other Jalapeno varieties we have tried. We think everyone should grow a variety of Jalapeno as they are so versatile in the kitchen and just down right delicious. Most Numex Varieties have been bred to be more prolific and disease resistant so it makes sense to put this one on your grow list.

Ljuti Pepper
C. Annuum
30,000 – 50,000 SHU
A mellow yellow in colour, this is a popular and widely used cayenne variety originating in the Balkens(Croatia). Ljuti in Croatian means hot so not the most creative juices went into naming it, but who cares, it tastes fantastic. The hardy plants produce prolific crops of green maturing to mellow yellow fruits similar in shape, size and heat to Cayenne. Fruit grow upwards and look great in their clusters. Taste wise they have a terrific zingy lemony pepper freshness that will have you coming back for more. The Ljuti is a great one for dried seasonings.

20,000 – 30,000 SHUI wonder if Lucifer was dreaming to himself one day, “I wish this chilli came in another color.” …….well it does! Lucifer’s Dream Yellow! It’s very versatile. You can stir fry it, put it in a garden salad or its big enough to be stuffed. It has great flavor and is not searing hot so the kids may well have a try of it too! The bush is compact and is a prolific producer. It is still very hard to get and worth growing!

Malaysian Explosive Ember
C.Annuum
2,000-3,000 SHUThis version of the ornamental explosive ember is quite a bit different to the original variety most people know of. We got this variety from a friend and fell in love with it. It seems to be more compact and dainty than the original explosive ember ornamental chilli plant. The pods are smaller too, having more of a vibrant yet pastel colour to them. It’s super productive and when the pods get going it just lights up the garden like no other. Totally easy to grow and is low maintenance as well. This one should be on your short list for an ornamental type chilli that actually tastes pretty good as it’s not too seedy. Size wise the plant grows about 20cm tall x 20cm wide – perfect for the patio.

Mexican Calico
C. Annuum
Approx 70,000 SHUAnother beautiful chilli variety we just had to grow. The Mexican Calico Chilli has beautiful purple, cream and green foliage with fruit that start out a glossy purple, ripening to a candy apple red.
The elongated sometimes oval-shaped fruit measure 2-3cms long x 1.5cm wide and are very prolific on the plant, even in small pots. Perfect for patio growing and would be great as a bonchi. A dream to grow as it is very hardy and super low maintenance for the lazy gardener. Go on, pretty up your garden with this little beauty.

Mini Piperka
C. Annuum
10,000 – 20,000 SHU
This chilli is super cute we have to say. The Mini Piperka(The Vezena Piperka) is a Heirloom pepper from Macedonia and is super rare. This is the miniature version of the normal Vezena Piperka. Super sweet with an amazing fruity cherry like flavor the pods grow to about 3-4cms long. The outside has an awesome embroided/corked outer skin with the inside being soft and blood red in colour. They are used in many dishes in Macedonia and made into beautiful sauces. Dried we think they’d make great Paprika powder. The Mini Vezena Piperka chilli plants grow between 2-3 feet tall and are very productive.
